    De elektrische locomotief TRAXX F140 MS, in Duitsland ingedeeld als de serie 186, behoort tot de derde generatie van de TRAXX locomotieven. Het is een doorontwikkeling van de TRAXX F140 AC, dus een vierspanningslocomotief voor AC en DC systemen met een vermogen van 5600 kW.

    De bij de BR 185.2 geïntroduceerde verbeteringen en wijzigingen, in het bijzonder de volgens de nieuwste veiligheidsnormen vervaardigde locomotiefkast, worden ook toegepast bij de BR 186. De 186 is beschikbaar met verschillende landenpakketten.

    De allereerste koper was de leasemaatschappij Angel Trains, die 35 locomotieven met drie verschillende uitrustingsniveau’s in opdracht heeft gegeven. Deze kunnen worden ingezet in de landen Duitsland, België, Nederland, Zwitserland, Oostenrijk, Italië en Polen. Ook andere particuliere spoorwegmaatschappijen hebben de locomotieven in haar voertuigenbestand. De Zwitserse BLS AG zet de locomotief in als Re 486 in het grensoverschrijdende verkeer in Europa.

    Het bedrijf Bombardier ontwikkelde op basis van de vierspanningslocomotief onder de aanduiding TRAXX F140 DC ook een locomotief voor uitsluitend gebruik onder DC spanning voor het verkeer in Italië. De fabrikant heeft de BR 186 ontwikkeld als een trekkracht voor goederentreinen. De loc is dankzij haar topsnelheid van 160 km/h echter ook zeer geschikt voor de inzet in het personenvervoer.
